The Colosseum: a complete tour

The Colosseum: a complete tour

Originally called the Amphitheatrum Flavium, the Colosseum is one of Rome’s most prized remains from the Roman Empire and is one of the most interactive historical sites for travelers. As a visitor, you are able to walk through the same corridors as the gladiators and stand in the exact spot as the spectators did so many years ago. There are many guided tours available, which allow the average traveler to unlock the secrets of Ancient Rome.

With an expert tour guide as your teacher, explore three unique areas of the Colosseum that are not usually available to the general public. The tour begins by allowing the group to skip all entrance lines and climb up to the third tier of the spectator stands. From here, enjoy a breathtaking view of the arena and imagine yourself in a crowd of 50,000 as your guide explains the history and significance of each area. From there, your tour will descend into the basement area of the Colosseum called the Hypogeum, which is usually difficult to obtain entrance to. The Hypogeum was the holding place for gladiators and animals during the arena events. Winding through these tunnels like the Ancient Romans is an experience not to be missed. Your guide will provide details and stories, and your mind will do the rest.

Tours are held four times every day and the pre-reserved ticket also allows you entrance into the Roman Forum and Palatine Museum, both without lines as well.  The average tour lasts about an hour and a half, is held in English, and can be customized upon request.
