Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo founded the Accademia di Belle Arti and the adjoining Galleria dell’Accademia in 1784. Accademia Gallery is one of the top museums in Florence mainly because it is current home to Michelangelo’s world famous statue of David. The famous sculpture was moved here in 1873 from where it once stood outside the Palazzo Vecchio. Other Michelangelo works are his portrayal of St. Matthew and he Four Prisoners.

The Accademia also have a Department of Musical Instruments containing precious musical instruments from the adjacent Cherubini Conservatory. Other must see works are Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabines and Botticelli’s Madonna. There is an exhibition Dal Giglio al David that ends on 12 august. It focuses on works of art origionally commissioned to decorate the public buildings of Florence which housed the magistracies tasked with running the city.
